Happy Independence Day

MOM

I try to honor you,
your memory,
but you taught me
to fear the world,
to distrust love,
mistrust love,
to despair.
I learned panic
at your side
and hatred.
I learned I had
no value,
no talent,
no hope
for happiness.
I learned to lie,
because you never
trusted.
I learned to hate
myself
and everyone else.

I learned that
nothing we do
in this life
matters.
And now that you’re
gone,
you don’t come
back to say
I got it wrong,
love is real,
forgive me.
You’re just
gone.
And with you
years of our
lives.

Yet still
I want to
protect you,
rewrite you,
forgive you.
Why?
Maybe love
is real.
