One Step at a Time

THIS ROAD ALONE

I can walk
This road alone

Can walk this
Road alone I

Walk this road
Alone I can

This road alone
I can walk

Road alone I
Can walk this

Alone I can
Walk this road

I can walk
This road alone

Can walk this
Road a lone I

One of my very favorite teachers was Mrs. Donovan in fourth grade. She made us memorize this list of Helping Verbs:

am, is, are
was, were
be, being, been
have, has, had
do, does, did
can, could
shall, should
will, would
may, might, must

Helping verbs. What a great idea! We all need help sometimes. I do walk this road alone. Must I walk this road alone? I have walked this road alone. This poem can go on and on, substituting different helpers. Should I walk this road alone? I almost wrote it out that way, going fully through each iteration, but chose not to since can captured my feeling completely.

Whether I must walk alone, or might walk alone, or have walked alone doesn’t matter. I can walk this road alone. I’d rather not, but I can.  And there will be times when only I can. And there will be times when this road alone is my choice. I will continue to look for help along the way, but I often need to remind myself that I can do this, even if I’m feeling very much alone.
