When Life is One Louder

my life blares
gridlocked voices
clog the intersection
snarling traffic
in my brain
pay attention
through the night
this city never sleeps

cue the laugh track
and soulful singers
raise your voice
or you’ll never
be heard

I lose my voice
in the shouting

my life blares
turn down the volume
let the lights cycle
ignore the horns
mute the world
listen for the
breath of god
on the wind
still the din
hear the
soft exhale
of the trees
