Even the Hardest Shell Can Crack

Your cry calls out a love
In me I thought was long dead.
Just one word from your lips,
And all you see in me wakes
To answer. All I fear in me,
Wakes at your call. The soft,
The vulnerable, answers
For both of us, proving you
Right: I am still alive.
I didn’t want to love you,
To open to that pain again
So late in my life.
But I can’t help myself
When you say you wish
You never had to leave me,
And ask, knowing the answer,
“Don’t you feel the same?”
