Is My Life Cozy or Confining?

THE KEY

I never dreamed of freedom,
Until you found me caged,
And showed me the key
Hung on a simple chain
Around my own neck.
How easily it fit the lock
And turned, opening a door
I had never seen.
I knew neither cage nor key
Till then, when you
Walked me out of that life
And into yours.
Now you’re leaving me here,
Not where you found me.
This open world feels far too big
For someone small like me.
Stay, please, and hold my hand
A moment longer. Tell me
Again the stories of your life
Lived wild and free.
I’ll close my eyes and pretend
I understand. I’ll promise
To remember that moment we met,
When you taught me to see
Cage and door and key
Hung on a simple chain
Around my own neck.
