The Silence

THE SILENCE

send the silence
I’m running out of breath
and my jaw aches from
holding back the screams
only dogs can hear
their sad eyes saying
that they witness all
and pray our souls
will make it home
I beg for silence
for air, for breath
my lungs black with ink
unspoken words like tumors
grow with anger held
waiting for a silence
strong enough to hold
this lifetime of sorrow
I can’t breathe another word
send the silence
save me from the din
the danger’s real
no air, no breath
just other’s words
swallowed, gulped
down, desperate
for the smallest
spaces in between
the tiny pauses
where wisps of silence
linger, mixed with stale
stories and dusty complaints
send the silence
before it’s too late
to save me from
drowning
